The Exam Module

Exam System
The exam system, which was designed entirely by optometrists, is an integral part of
the Blue Diamond Optometrist system. It allows the user to enter and maintain all patient
exams on-line. In addition, it transfers large amounts of information to other modules
within the system. For example, when a prescription is entered into a patient exam form,
that prescription becomes part of the dispensary and contact lens files as well.
Similarly, procedure and diagnostic codes entered into the exam forms are automatically
transferred to MSP billing files.
Entering an exam on-line is not difficult or time consuming. Data from pre-screening
equipment can be captured and transferred to the exam file. This data can simply be
viewed, or it can be added to the file, printed, or deleted. The standard exam form is
pre-set with all of the fields necessary to record a full eye examination, however many
optometrists prefer to have a custom exam form created. The custom form can adhere to the
personal tastes of the user. The user can re-arrange the standard fields to appear in any
order, drop unnecessary fields, and have up to 30 user-defined fields added to the form.
In addition, the exam system is capable of storing up to 9 different types of exam
forms. For example, the user may decide to create forms for full exams, partial exams,
post-op check ups, and so forth. With one keystroke the user can easily switch between the
different forms.
Data is quickly and efficiently entered into exam forms with the aid of user defined
'pick-lists'. These lists, which save the user from repeatedly typing common field
entries, can be created for all, or specific fields, within an exam form. The current
exam, as well as the last exam, is displayed on the same screen. The arrow keys are used
to scroll through all previous exams.
Notes can be added to the exam file in the same manner as they are added to the
patient file. If MSP notes are added to the exam file they will automatically be
transferred to the Medical Services Plan with the next MSP transmission file (see MSP Billing).
Once the exam is complete, the user can print prescriptions, add procedure and
diagnostic codes, and choose to pre-appoint the patient. If a future appointment is made,
the date is entered into the system. These dates are transferred to the recall system, and
used to notify the patient at the appropriate time.
